Three Steps You Must Follow To Avoid Childhood Obesity by Nana

Childhood obesity has now become a worldwide problem. More and more children these days are suffering the same symptoms and diseases that were once only seen in adults; heart disease, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, to name just a few. Obesity is becoming one of the serious problems day by day all over the world. Obesity is termed as increase in the body weight of an individual due to excessive accumulation of fats. Where do all the little needles point to when they get hungry? You're the one they look to, when they are young, to buy, prepare, and serve the food they eat. This is when good or bad habits are developed. You set the rules and govern the amount of food and type of food that comes into the house. To battle childhood obesity there are three steps you must follow.
1.Eating dinner at the table more than 5 times a week .
2.Sleep at least 10.5 hours a night.
3.Watch less than 2 hours of TV a day.
It's that simple? In a study conducted by Sarah Anderson, Ph.D, and assistant professor of epidemiology at Ohio State University, 8,550 4 year old from around the United States followed these three steps and were found to be 40 percent less likely to become obese than children that did none of these things.
When you sit down to dinner, as a family, without TV, you can regulate what your children eat , the proportions and the proper amounts. If they are sitting in front of the TV, how are you going to know if they ate their broccoli or the dog ate it? In some families the parents are working two jobs or odd hours and the only time they can see the kids is if they let them stay up late. If they stay up late that means less sleep, more treats and TV. Bad, BAD and more BAD. 10.5 hours a night gives kids the rest they need to be energetic and active the next day. You can't pay attention in school if you stay up late. We have all heard the evils of TV all our lives but what does that have to do with being obese? If you are sitting around watching TV you are most likely, if you 're a kid, not doing any type of exercise. You are probably snacking and your probably staying up late. All together now bad, BAD and more BAD! Less than 2 hours a day of TV is recommended by this study. That gives a kid time to come home from school, play outside, come in and do homework, eat dinner Then see some TV before getting the 10.5 hours sleep they need. It's all about education. You get what you need and then you'll be able to give what they need! Visit:http://affiliatemoneyathome.com/weightloss/

I completely agree that childhood obesity is a worldwide problem. It’s really turning into epidemic. But the ways to battle obesity are not as simple as eating dinner at the table at least 5 times a week, sleeping at least 10.5 hours a night, and watching less than 2 hours of TV a day. Simply eating dinner at the table does not help fight obesity. The food served at the table needs to be controlled. Yes, eating at the table will help because the food might be home-cooked, but that does not mean the food is healthy at all. Eating at the table could still mean ordering food out but eating it at your home. Portions need to be controlled and the way the food is prepared needs to be watched. Also, sleep is important but, in reality, kids can’t always get that much sleep because of other activities and homework. It’s hard to get that much sleep when you have to get up for school at 6am so that you can get ready for school. Getting 10.5 hours of sleep would mean having to go to sleep 7:30pm! This is really almost impossible for students because of homework. Sleep is important but there really is not any way for a person to get 10.5 hours of sleep a night. I do agree with you about watching less than 2 hours of TV a day. Kids need to be outside more and they need to be running around not playing video games and watching TV. Going outside would give the kids more physical activity which would help control the weight problems.
Parents need to have more control of the food intake of their children and they need to make their kids participate in more physical activities. also, schools need to require more gym classes so that they can get activity in school. making them more active will help with this epidemic but it will still not completely control it.

I really like these tips. I am a fitness trainer and many of my clients are concerned with their children being obese. 1 on my clients forund a product called kidsercise at fityourworld.com. it is short exercise programs on a DVD with equipment. After seeing it I have recommended it to a lot of my clients. I found it really helpful to kids that don't like tridational sports programs. its worth a try!

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic. Although the article points out some wonderful ideas that are helpful, I would also like to point out that fun activities that get the kids moving is just as important as eating right and sleeping well. A program called http://recessrocks.com/ is doing wonders in Connecticut to help this cause.

I also agree that childhood obesity is the largest growing epidemic in the United States today. But what we have to start doing first, is educating the parents/care takers. Like a previous post stated, just because you are eating at the table at night and it is home-cooked, doesn't mean it is healthy. Parents are role models in everything including what you eat. Parents are also in charge, generally, of what their child eats. So when parents are grocery shopping, it is benificial to know what is healthy and what is not. As far as the sleep goes, I do not agree with this. Like a previous post said, it is impossible for a child to get 10 hours asleep. But EXERCISE is the most important thing in a childs life. And there are so many ways that families can interact and be doing exercise at the same time. It all boils down to just being educated and knowing what to do to keep your child healthy.

Watching less TV is a great idea. All too often parents stick their kids in front of the TV and leave them there, and the habit stays with them as they grow up.

Shocking new childhood obesity commercial cracks down on parents.

Released yesterday by The Precinct Studios, ‘Break the Habit’ is a new commercial that aims to draw attention to the epidemic of childhood obesity in Australia. The commercial - intentionally controversial in subject matter - directly targets parents who continue to feed their children junk food regardless of the damaging effects it is known to cause them. By comparing junk food to drug abuse, the commercial aims to make parents stop and think about their actions and remind them that junk food is a major contributor of childhood obesity, which is linked to a variety of chronic illnesses.

Henry Motteram, Managing Director of The Precinct Studios says, “Parents need to be aware that if their children become obese, it is more than likely because of them. For whatever reason, many parents ignore the early signs that surround the onset of obesity and fail in their duty of care to address the problem. It is hoped that this commercial will highlight this and get people talking about the topic”.

‘Break the Habit’ launched yesterday via social networking sites in a successful bid to start a discussion around not only childhood obesity but parents responsibility in the matter.

The commercial can be viewed at:

I saw a news report about a program that brings fitness into to the classroom and I think is a really good idea. Kids are just not getting the exercise they need anymore and not eating right

The campaign reinvents recess by pairing dance instructors with schools to increase students’ activity through creative movement. Until recently, the program was only implemented in Connecticut schools but is now available to schools across the country.

As part of the launch of the program, a nationwide video contest has been announced for children and young teens in grades 2 through 8 across the United States in addressing childhood obesity. I found this information on their site, www.recessrocks.com.

I belive the problem is poor eating habits & lack of exercise. Most causes of childhood obesity could come from stress or low self-esteem. I agree with you most when you say "The food served at the table needs to be controlled." Bottom line!

I saw a news report about a program that both brings fitness into the classroom and promotes awareness for the need of physical activity in the lives of children. Many kids today are not getting the amount of exercise they need and are also uneducated about the health risks of eating poorly. The campaign helps to reinvent recess by increasing students’ activity through alternative and creative movements, with the help of dance instructors.

The program initially was only implemented in Connecticut schools, but with its success and the overall concern of the issue at hand, it is now available to schools across the country. As part of the launch program, a video contest has been announced for children and young teens in grades 2-8 with efforts to address childhood obesity. I also agree that T.V., as well as video games, are a huge problem in fighting the childhood obesity epidemic. Not only are children not getting the exercise they need they are also usually consuming more empty calories like soda and junk food while doing it; a double whammy! However, I just finished writing a research paper about this very subject, and one of the biggest things left out of consideration when talking about this problem, is the battle that low income households face. It is really easy to say "kids need to go outside and play more" but what if your neighborhood is riddled with crime. It is easy to say "eat at the table with your children" but what if you are working multiple jobs just to be able to provide for your children. It is easy to say "buy healthy foods instead of low nutrition foods" but what if there are only "bodegas" that don't carry fruits and veggies in your area. There are so many hurdles that low income families face that there more affluent counterparts never have to think about. I think that education is definitely the key, but we need to consider all aspects of the situation

I am so glad that for a change there is a blog not blaming the fast food industry for the obesity of children in this country. Parents are responsible for their own children and their eating habits. 1 in 3 children are obese in the US. We have a real problem. McDonald's will continue to be around- we must find a way to help children make better choices!

I have been doing a lot of research on childhood obesity for an essay I have written. This is a big problem and one that will not easily be fixed. I think these are great tips to help make small changes in a household to fight obesity, but I also think that there is more to it then just three steps. Obesity is a serious problem and needs to be taken seriously, there are many steps we should all take to help fight against it. We definitely need a better education on health and to promote that in our homes. Three steps are a good start but we should continue with other good changes. Making sure healthy dinners are made and healthy snacks are available to choose from. Start setting good habits at home and don't forget about doing activities that allow for the family to be active and to spend time off of the couch.(Even things as small as having the kids help with dinner instead of watching TV) Its good to be involved with your children and help them make the right choices now. That way when they are adults they will already have those good habits instilled in them. Any changes we can make will be a step in the right direction!

Healthy fats in reasonable amounts help balance blood sugar and reduce internal inflammation. Studies show countless benefits from brisk walking for as little as 15 minutes a day, from reduced body fat to increased bone density.

These tips are easier said and done. Try to look at the comments of commenter Fat B. I think we should include those symptoms on your future research of Dr. Anderson. They become psychological aggressive and take things negatively. In addition to the post, parental influence is one of the most effective way to prevent this kind of malnutrition. This trend can be seen in the rising numbers of overweight and obese adults. One of the most lasting and influential impacts on a child will be the examples set by the parents.

Parents should not make changes in the diet of a child solely on the perception of overweight. The most important strategies for the prevention of obesity are unhealthy eating habits, regular physical activity and reduced sedentary activity.

Obesity is used to describe a person’s health where his weight of the body is greater than the normal average weight by 20 percent or more. Such person is referred to as obese and with it comes the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiac arrest and other heart problems, high blood pressure, breast cancer, prostrate and colon cancer, gall bladder ailment etc.
In United States approximately 3 lakh deaths annually are due to obesity. Some of the common reasons for obesity are detailed hereunder:
Overeating – The foods/ drinks that we intake provides energy for carrying out normal body activities like digestion, breathing, walking, standing, sitting etc. For an ideal weight, then amount of energy obtained should balance the energy utilized. But if the amount of energy obtained is greater than the amount of energy utilized the excess energy gets converted into “fat” and results in gain in weight. This is one of the most common reasons for overweight and Obesity.

Very useful information! First of all we (parents) must teach our children of a of healthy eating habits! And it is necessary for them to go to some sport (i am sure every child like some kind of sport and it is not necessary to be the best in this sport, just to do this because of their body)

there needs to me more structure to family life a good breakfast, lunch and dinner is a good start but if people allow kids to be driven around in cars and sit in front of the TV or playing video games then this will cause them to get fat. More eductation is needed for parents and more activities that are free or cheap. I agree wirh the previous comments that todays lifestyle with homework etc means it is very dificult for children to have the structure needed to get the sleep to grow healthily and stop them from being so tired. This means they don't have the energy, active and healthy lifestyles are more important than school targets and curriculums as being fit and healthy and getting excercie will also help them concentrate in school.

Nationwide over the past several Years there has been a push for more healthy choices at fast food establishments. Statewide restaurants are required to publish the calories in their food offerings to help patrons to make healthier choices. The law and effort has been in effect for several years now, yet the childhood obesity rate in Washington State is at around 20 percent.

The question now lies with the parents. Who is responsible for the choices made for your children, you or McDonalds?

Let's not play the blame game when it comes to our children. It is much wiser to take action instead. Eating healthier, getting more sleep, less television, requiring restaraunts to publish calories all good ideas. But, if a parent is not willing to parent, to make the hard choices for the child and back up your decisions with consistancy, we can all blog until our finger tips are numb.

Please be responsible parents.
