Childhood Obesity - Is It Out Of Control? by Gary J Kidd

Nearly 15% of all children in the USA are officially Obese. That is also true for teenagers and that percentage is getting higher each year. The last three decades has seen a huge increase in these figures. What makes it all the more frightening, is that it is not getting better.
Over 25 Million children in the USA are overweight or in danger of being so. Childhood obesity is rising and it is now the biggest pediatric problem in the USA with up to 30% of adolescent children suffering from it.

So who is to blame for this crisis? well, to be honest, the parents are most at fault but alongside that we need support centers and programs put in place to help. Children who have obese parents are 75% more likely to become obese themselves, which means we need to help the parents now to prevent this from getting out of hand. Helping people eat more healthily and control their weight is important in helping to reduce the childhood obesity problem.

It is not just in the USA of course. This is becoming a worldwide problem with Australia having one of the highest childhood obesity problems. It is a national issue and not just restricted to rural and suburban areas.

Schools must also take action as nearly half of the children in school eat school meals. They must be given healthy great tasting food instead of what fits the budget for financial reasons. Too many schools are driven by financial costs instead of realizing that if they fed their children healthy food, it would in fact save them money in the long run.

It is important to understand the cost to the American tax payer is estimated to be between $150 to $200 Billion dollars a year with time lost at work, hospital costs, medications etc. The fatter people get the more it costs the country in lost production and ultimately the lifestyle of the people and the economy itself.

Chronic diseases are associated with obesity like high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes etc. The cost of treating these disease puts more and more pressure on the health system and the overall cost to the nation is huge!

Childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic and soon it will be out of control completely. We need to not just educate these people but the whole nation as a whole. Action needs to be taken now before it really is too late.

Interesting read! I think the best way to start promoting healthy eating in children is removing sweets and sodas from schools! Five to ten (depending on if the children are eating both breakfast and lunch) are eaten at school every week. Children will hopefully pick up healthier eating habits this way for the rest of their lives, also! You can find some additional interesting reading over at the Dietary Supplement Information Bureau page on childhood obesity.

I could not agree more! I just want to add…To my mind, the Internet and video games as leading causes for the obesity crisis, as kids are tempted to stay inside rather than playing and exercising outdoors. He was absolutely addicted, that’s why I bought parental control software Ez Internet Timer that allows to limit the amount of time he spent online. Great program! It lets me turn off my son’s internet when I want it to. Since then he began to spend more time with his friends, play football and lost some weight. I think he became happier and no doubt healthier.

This is a serious concern. 1 in 3 kids in the US are overweight, and 1 in 7 are obese. Changes are needed.

I beleive this article is very important and there needs to be more to help spread awareness of the epidemic of child obesity. It is a huge problem and parents are to blame.
Parents need to take a stronger role in thier obese childrens lives to teach them better eating and excersize habits. Also, the government needs to step in and incorporate more healthy food choices to schools nationwide and also incoporate health classes for parents and children and more mandatory physical education classes as well. If these steps are not taken soon, the author is right, it will be too late.

One of the things i wish the article would delve into, is the fact that perhaps sstricter and more intense steps should be taken to helping reduce the obesity epidemic. An example of this would be to tax sugary food, fast foods, sodas and other fattening, non nutritious food that are contributing to Americas obesity.

Anonymous said...

Very informative article. Thanks.

I think that if we want children to eat healthy parents have to put an example. Because parents always tell their children not to eat junk food but some parents still buy sodas and chips, and when they dont do dinner the kids eat macaroni and cheese or pizzas whatever they could make. I think the parents should be the first to eat healthy and show an example to their kids that way the kids will maybe understand more and actually obey.

Make parents show a good example by also carrying out chores, eating healthily and doing regular exercise, limit time spent on the Internet, gaiming, TV! Believe me, as a mother or 7, I find it works a treat!!
And thank you Bryan for Ez Internet Timer. It does seem to be a program worth considering. I downloaded the program from thir website www.internettimer.net. Awesome software from the first glance. If my 14 year old guru didn't break it during it 2 weeks of trial, I will buy it. Thank you again!

Good article and needed discussion. There is not a simple answer to the problem because it is a problem caused by social norms/lifestyles. Therefore, it is pervasive and difficult to reverse on a national level. It can be done, however. Solutions need to focus on two fronts: prevention and reducing the number of those who are already obese. www.youthfitnesssolutions.com focuses on the activity levels of children and advocating stronger PE programs.

I think parents are the deciding factor on the healthy weight of a child. Children don't know any better and if their parents don't teach them healthy habits and supply them with healthy foods they continue to gain weight. In most cases the parents themselves are obese and are not educated in proper nutrition.

Dr. Marta Katalenas said...

I agree that the childhood obesity epidemic is spreading around the world, but the problem in the U.S. is more severe than in the country where I grew up, Spain. As a pediatrician, I'm a childhood obesity expert, and I believe that my American patients can learn something from the eating habits of Spaniards. In Spain, people don't eat in a rush as often as my patients do. Families should take time to prepare home-cooked meals and to eat together. The meals do not need to be complicated, time-consuming affairs. In fact, simpler meals are often more nutritious. Natural food is delicious, too.

Great post! I agree completely with you on the schools. At my sons school recess has been eliminated. I can't believe how widespread news is on obesity and the school district recognizes this but they cut out the only physical activity these kids get during the day. Not to mention the various vending machines in the school that is full of junk food and soda. This is a serious problem and it needs to be addressed by everyone.

I believe we must change our country's culture in an effort to prevent childhood obesity. Prior to the digital age, children were eager to go out and play, unknowingly engaging in physical activity that burned off the calories they consumed in meals and snacks. Full of energy and eager to use their imagination, children played games for hours on end with their friends, begging for just a few more minutes before they had to return to their homes to have with their families. This good important information for parents, teachers caregivers and anyone who play a major role in the lifes of young children to pay attetion to. Children are watching us and we need to set a example by modeling good nutrition and geting good physical activity in during the day.I think early childhood teachers should make it a priority in thier programs to model and teach good nutrition.Teachers should talk with thier children about what kinds of are important to being eating. Young children have lots of engergy teachers need to be flexible and talk children outside to play and to get physical as much as possible even if it may not be the most convenient time for the teacher.

I am a former special education teacher and I wrote a children's picture book that tackles the issue of childhood obesity. Hunka Chunka Monkey Shapes Up entertains children without being preachy. It places a simple truth as a foundation in their hearts.....to cut back on their favorite snack, become active and make new friends.

Chris Powell of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition reads my book to his children every night. He stated on his FaceBook, "The kids are requesting Hunka Chunka Monkey Shapes Up for their bedtime story tonight....AGAIN! This is the third in a row, but I love it. What a great message of healthy living for children:). Nicely done, Sam E Bromley!" Chris's wife, Heidi Powell, used such words as 'amazing' and 'brilliant' when describing my story! I am excited about getting this message out. You can go to YouTube.com and type in my book's name: Hunka Chunka Monkey Shapes Up and see a brief message about my story! Please pass this on for all to see and partner with me and let us stop the obesity problem in America by encouraging the very young to skip, run and jump their way to a better life and a better future!

I really enjoyed your post. Right now I am doing a paper on childhood obesity. In my local school system, it is all about having cost effective food, and I believe they should receive more funding to provide healthier lunch choices. I also believe that schools should provide more time for physical activities for their students.

This is a national and even worldwide problem that needs more attention. It is sad that more children are suffering the same symptoms and diseases that once were only seen in adults. The idea that children have a 75% chance to become obese if the parents are also obese. I have always wondered how much of that percentage is because of genetics.

Anonymous said...

There are many factors to blame for the world being so obese. These factors would include a change in technology over the years, a change in people’s lifestyles, a change in transportation, a lack of physical activity and a change in how the working industry runs. More people than ever eat out on a regular basis. This is a problem because of the places they are choosing to eat at. McDonald’s, Burger King, and KFC altogether have 59,000 restaurants globally and serve 89 million people per day. This is just three of the many fast food restaurants available. The vast majority of people know that these food places are unhealthy yet they still choose to eat there. Take McDonald’s for instance, they are the leading fast food restaurant in the world and their target audience is always children. You take your child to McDonald’s because the food is cheap, quick, and your child receives a toy with the meal. By aiming their advertisements at children and getting children to go at a young age, effectively they have customer for life who will more than likely take their children in the future. However, fast food restaurants can’t be fully blamed for the obesity levels. Around 60% of the world’s population doesn’t get enough exercise. Less than 20 years ago the majority of family households had one car per family, whereas in today’s society families will have two or more cars. Transportation has changed so much in the past 50 years. There are now more ways to get around, and no need to walk anywhere. Sedentary lifestyles are now more popular than ever as people work 8-5 jobs Monday through Friday.

Obesity is becoming a national and world problem. It's becoming an epidemic and it's only getting worse. We need to stop letting the children become obese because that will lead to more adults being obese and a higher chance of people never doing anything to lose weight. It's honestly a sad thing, especially to go out and see a ridiculousy amount of obese and overweight is disturbing. This is a serious issuse and it needs to start getting under control. If not who knows what it will do to the future of humans and how it could destroy us.

Excercise and diet is the first thing that comes up in our mind if we want to shed those extra weight and it really helps a lot. Decipline and determination is the first key to success, but we always wanted the easiest way. Many people considered lapband as their last option but is it safe? I was searching the internet and I just would like to ask this question if you heared anything about it, the link is - youtube.com/user/RocaLabsReviews and it says that it will give you a gastric bypass result but no surgery at all...any info?

Childhood obesity can still be prevented. As parents, we need to do something. We, more than anyone are accountable for our children's condition. I came from a family where we only drink soda during a family member's birthday, we eat the biggest meal of the day before leaving home and because of the tight budget, we couldn't even buy a junk snack in school which I realized I should be thankful for. Now that I have my own family, I thought to let my child have what I didn't have when I was like his age which is a big NO. I let him become overweight these past years and now I let him take the powder called Roca Labs Formula in the morning, and he was able to lose weight without me, controlling how much he eats. It's an incredible aid for children.

Childhood obesity is definitely a cause for concern all over the world especially in the United States of America. You made very valid points as to why you believe childhood obesity is on the rise in America. I do believe that technology plays a role in our children overweight issues. I also think that parents do play a major role in childhood obesity also. Over the past few years many studies have came out referencing steroids in foods the readily available fast food and the inactivity of our children which all leads to sedentary lifestyles. Parents need to take a more active role in the type of foods we feed our children and insure that outdoor activities is a major part of their lifestyles. A few simple changes can go a long way. Again I really enjoyed your view points.

Childhood obesity is a problem affecting over twelve million children in the United States. Race, ethnicity, age, and gender all play a role in which groups of children have a higher obesity rate. Children today are getting less exercise due to increased media time and less than ten percent of schools require physical education classes. Children are exposed to over forty thousand fast food commercials a year which plays a big role in the foods they consume. The children that eat most of their meals at school are exposed to foods that are lacking in nutrition because of low budgets and contracts with companies that provide junk food to the school. Also, children and parents need to be educated on proper nutrition. Family dynamics play a big part in a child’s overall health. Eating meals together, exercising together, and learning together keep children and parents healthy without making a child feel singled out because they have to eat differently or exercise more than anyone else. It will take a lot to end childhood obesity but it can be done. It starts within families and works toward changing society.

The childhood obesity is increasing at an unimaginable rate. The Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) are trying hard to reduce obesity and the problems related to it, by conducting various awareness programs, state programs, surveillance and research, and technical assistance to fight the childhood obesity. Apart from all these, kids are getting many psychological effects due to obesity.

Psychological Effects of Childhood Obesity

Some of the effects due to childhood obesity are:

Low Self-Esteem
Laziness
Increased carelessness
Childhood Obesity and Low Self-Esteem

Right from the childhood, it is a common human tendency to compare ourselves with others. In this artificial world, looks get the first preference and best impression. All the over-weight kids get separated and bullied in schools. The obese kids not only get segregated from others, but also are not allowed to join any sport or other group events. After a lot of peer aggression and teasing, many children feel hesitant to socialize. This affects the self-esteem of the children.

Childhood Obesity and Laziness

Many kids who are obese, are lazy. They try to skip all their work and sit in front of a computer or television. They avoid going out, as they feel it as an embarrassing moment. Due to lack of any physical activity, they increase weight even further.

Childhood Obesity and Carelessness

Obesity can make the kids become careless. After a while, their obese problems don’t seem to bother them any more. As a result many of them stop thinking about their peers, and even themselves. This leads to carelessness and addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Suggestions to Reduce Psychological Effects of Childhood Obesity

A great support from the family members.
Controlled diet and physical activity.
Having fat burning food will help you a lot.
Joining some groups, if required, groups that are specially formed for obese children.

How Depression and Childhood Obesity are Related?

Childhood is a phase of life where presence of parents around the child is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, there are changes in our priorities of life. Parents are more involved in raising the standard of living of the family members. In this process, they hardly have some quality time to spend for the family. Children grow without the love, affection and guidance of the parents. Interaction with the parents is slotted on only weekends par se. For the rest of the week, they miss their parents in every sense of the word.

Emotional loneliness causes drop in self esteem and slowly the issue heads toward depression in a very young age. The impact of this undesirable mental condition lasts for the rest of the life of the individual if not addressed on time. Parents cant blame their kids for spending hours before television or computer and eat fast food. They are absent in times when children make these choices and by the time they intervene the damage is done more or less.
